What newborn photography costs in Auckland
When you read through Auckland photographers' public price pages, three pricing styles appear again and again.
- A low session fee with images sold separately. Fees of around NZ$250 to NZ$400 are common, and you then choose and buy a collection of edited images. The headline number looks small, but the final bill depends on how many photos you want.
- A fixed package with a set number of images. Some photographers list small packages (eight to twenty-five photos) at roughly NZ$300 to NZ$450. Others, working from a home studio, list a single newborn session near NZ$900 that includes about twenty high resolution digital images.
- Tiered bundles. A mini newborn shoot at about NZ$590, a longer one at about NZ$890 and a newborn plus maternity bundle at about NZ$1,390 are typical of studio-based tiers.
These figures come from public listings we reviewed and photographers change them regularly, so treat them as a guide to the range, not a quote. The lower end is usually a shorter session, fewer images or on-location travel not included. The upper end typically means a longer booking, studio styling or a larger set of finished images.

What drives the price up or down
Two photographers can both say "newborn session" and be selling quite different things. These are the factors that move the fee most.
Session length and pace
A newborn cannot be hurried. Feeding, settling and nappy changes all happen mid-shoot, so a realistic session allows time for pauses. Shorter bookings cost less, but a rushed session often gives you fewer calm frames. Ask how long the booking is and whether the clock stops for feeds.
Location: your home, a studio or outdoors
A home session saves you a trip with a new baby and often gives the most natural, personal images. A studio gives controlled warmth and lighting. Some Auckland photographers charge more for on-location sessions, and some add travel for areas outside their usual zone. We cover the practical side of shooting at home in our guide to newborn photos at home.
Images included, and how they are edited
This is where most surprises happen. Check whether the price includes:
- a set number of edited, high resolution digital images,
- the right to print them and share them online,
- an online gallery and how long it stays available,
- prints, albums or wall art (usually extra).
Styling, props and extras
Blankets, wraps and simple backdrops are often included. Hired outfits, specialty props or a second photographer can add to the cost. If you want outfit ideas that photograph well, see our notes on what to wear for a newborn session.
Weekends and demand
Some photographers charge more for Saturday or Sunday bookings, and newborn dates are by nature uncertain, so many ask for a booking in pregnancy and then confirm once the baby arrives.
Maternity photography prices in Auckland
Maternity sessions generally sit in a similar bracket to a newborn session, and many Auckland photographers sell them together at a discount. Where a newborn session runs close to NZ$900, a maternity session is often priced a little lower because it is outdoors or in a simple studio set-up and does not require the extra care a newborn needs. A bundle that combines both is the cheapest way to get both sets of images from one photographer if you know you want them.
If you are planning maternity photos, think about timing, wardrobe and poses before you book. Our guides on maternity photo poses and maternity photo dresses to hire or buy in NZ help you arrive prepared, and a prepared client usually means a shorter, more relaxed session.
Our baby and maternity prices
We are an Auckland portrait, branding and wedding photographer, and baby and maternity sessions are part of what we do. Our published prices are fixed per session:
| Session | Price |
|---|---|
| Tiny Moments, baby shoot | NZ$345 |
| Quick Maternity shoot | NZ$460 |
| Extended Maternity shoot | NZ$690 |
The baby shoot is our entry point and sits at the lower end of the Auckland range above. The extended maternity shoot gives you more time to change location or outfit and to work through different poses without feeling rushed. You can see the details of each on our maternity and baby photography page.
If you want a newborn session at home or a combined booking, get in touch and we will confirm what is included and the right option for your timing.

A perspective from us: what we think parents should weigh
We have found that parents who ask about price first are really asking about confidence. Will the photographer be calm with a tiny baby, will I look tired and awkward, and will I get photos I love? Our approach is the same across everything we shoot: a relaxed, engaging style that puts camera-shy people at ease, careful planning beforehand and clear guidance on the day, so nobody needs to know how to pose.
For newborn work that means three things we would put above price.
- Safety comes first. Baby is never placed in anything unsafe for the sake of a picture, and a parent stays within arm's reach. We list what to bring in our guide to a safe newborn photoshoot.
- Plan for the whole family. Siblings are often the hardest and most rewarding part of a session. Our sibling photo plan shows how we keep that safe and fun.
- Choose the person, not just the package. Look at a photographer's portfolio, check that their style suits you, and talk to them before you book. A fee that is NZ$100 lower is no bargain if you do not love the images.
There is no need to buy the largest package. Most families are happiest with a sensible set of images they will actually print and share.

Questions to ask before you pay a deposit
Use the same list with every photographer so you can compare like for like.
- What is the total price, including GST and any travel?
- How long is the session, and does the time stop for feeds and settling?
- How many edited images do I receive, and are they high resolution digital files?
- Where is the session held, and what do I need to prepare? (Warm room, a recent feed and a few simple outfits help.)
- What is the booking and cancellation process if the baby arrives early or late?
A clear photographer answers all five without hesitation, and the answers also show how organised they will be on the day.
Fresh 48 and other newborn options
Not every newborn session is a studio-style portrait. Some parents prefer documentary images in the first days, in hospital or at home. These are quieter, more candid sessions and they are priced differently from a posed studio session. We describe what to capture in our guide to Fresh 48 photos. If you want those first-hours images, ask any photographer whether they offer them and how they price the shorter booking.
Book your baby or maternity session
If you would like relaxed, natural photos of your bump or your new arrival, take a look at our baby and maternity packages and send us an enquiry with your due date. We will talk you through the options and confirm availability.

We keep the process simple: you enquire, we confirm the package that suits you, and a deposit holds your date. For wider options across our portrait work, our main site shows everything we offer in Auckland.
Practical tips to keep the cost sensible
- Book early. Reserve your newborn date during pregnancy, so you are not scrambling after the birth.
- Choose images over extras. A modest number of great images costs less than a large collection you never print.
- Combine sessions. If you know you want maternity and newborn photos, ask about doing both with the same photographer.
- Prepare well. A tidy, warm space, a fed baby and simple outfits mean a shorter session and a happier baby.
- Compare totals, not headlines. A low session fee plus paid image collections can end up costing more than a fixed package.
FAQ
How much does a newborn photographer cost in Auckland?
Published Auckland price lists range from about NZ$300 for a small package to roughly NZ$900 for a full newborn session with digital images. Bundles combining newborn and maternity sessions can reach about NZ$1,390. Always confirm the current price and what is included.
How much is maternity photography in Auckland?
It varies by session length and location. Our Quick Maternity shoot is NZ$460 and our Extended Maternity shoot is NZ$690. Many photographers also offer a discount when you book maternity and newborn sessions together.
When should I book a newborn photographer?
Most photographers like to hear from you during pregnancy so they can hold a flexible window around your due date. Contact them as soon as you know you want photos, then confirm the session once your baby arrives.
Are digital images included in the price?
That depends on the photographer. Some include a set number of edited digital images in the package, while others charge a session fee and sell images separately. Ask for the full cost to receive the files you want before you book.
Can the session happen at home?
Often yes, and many parents prefer it because it is easier with a newborn. Check whether the photographer charges extra for travel and what you need to prepare, then read our guide to newborn photos at home.
